Title: Facilitating
Online Learning & Engagement: Feedback from Our Students
Description: Leveraging student voice and
perspective, upper-class Engineering students will share what engages them in
their learning within an online environment. The session provides the
opportunity to learn directly from students and immediately apply takeaways to
participant’s own curriculum and instruction. The faculty moderator will
provide brief closing remarks and examples of hands-on online lessons and
active learning techniques that have been well-received by students in a
mid-sized class.
Abstract: Four Engineering students have agreed to
co-present with me (pending their class schedules) on how to facilitate an
engaging and active online learning environment. As we often discuss what we
think students need, this session provides the opportunity to learn directly
from students what they have found engaging about their online courses.
Leveraging student voice and asset-based feedback, this session will focus on
best practices and takeaways faculty can directly apply to their course. Learning objectives: As a result of actively engaging in this
session, participants will… Identity
student feedback on what makes an online course engaging Apply one technique discussed to their own
online course Here is a tentative
outline for the 15 minute session:
-Each of the students will share the perspective on the following
prompt: What was one online class session that engaged you, and why? -I will briefly share how I prepare for an
engaging online course for approx. 60 students, specifically highlighting the
formative assessments I gather from students after each class to meet their
needs and center their voice in the curriculum
-A formative ticket-to-leave form will be shared in the chat as an
example of how to close the class (and in this case, presentation)
