Title: "Not
your grandparent's” discussion boards for the 2020 classroom
Description: Admit it- when you are designing a
course or taking a course as a student, you groan at the idea of engaging it
yet, ANOTHER!, discussion board. So why do we do it? Well, they kind of work
don’t they? As an instructor, it is the easiest way to facilitate an
asynchronous, student- based discussion that ticks the box of assessing
understanding and learning by analogy and also being the quickest way to help
us measure student engagement. Discussion boards aren’t going away, in fact,
more instructors are using them now with hybrid, remote and online teaching
than ever before. This online synchronous session focuses on developing
discussion boards that work for you AND your students. Gone are the days of
boring post, reply, repeat boards, welcome to the “not your grandparent's"
discussion board conversation for learning in 2020.
Abstract: This is a 15 minute synchronous session
showing how to develop robust and interactive discussion boards in Canvas. This
session will incorporate online teaching pedagogy including the use of
protocols and tips for leveraging Canvas tools and integrations such as Kaltura
and FlipGrid. The goal is to help facilitate a more meaningful student
experience in a streamlined way that does not overly burden the instructor.
Whether you are new to Canvas or an experienced user, you will find value in
this session.
