Title: Bringing the Fun Back to Economics Fundamentals: Student Engagement Strategies
Description: As an instructor, I believe in application oriented pedagogy. My success is reflected in the ability of my students in putting in their acquired economic knowledge to analyze real-world situations. Due to the current situation with pandemic, it is extremely challenging for students to attend and remain focused during the classroom activities. To facilitate classroom learning by overcoming these challenges, I follow a two-step strategy: 1. Lecture: My class generally starts with showing a short video and then I lecture synchronously on Webex. I also record additional videos on Kaltura explaining complex and tedious concepts. 2. Application: I play some in-class games so that the students learn while having fun. One of them is scrabble with economics words. I do a lot of practice problems on connect and they work on them using breakout rooms. I use polling to check their understanding level in real time and for taking attendance. I also use the discussion section on canvas to initiate more interactions.
Abstract: As an instructor, I believe in application oriented pedagogy. I try to relate my teaching to real world scenario and design different in-class activities to encourage student interaction and engagement. I play some in-class economics games so that the students learn while having fun. One of them is scrabble with economics words. While I teach game theory, I design a game where the students act as firms and decide their strategies. I do a lot of practice problems on connect and they work on them using breakout rooms. I use polling to check their understanding level in real time and for taking attendance. I also use the discussion section on canvas to initiate more interactions.
